FUTURE PORN

VR PORN IS THE WAY OF THE FUTURE

Tomorrow I am filming my first Virtual Reality porn scene with director and filmmaker Michelle Flynn from LightSouthern. It is going to be an utterly hedonistic 4 girl strip poker/group scene, shooting at a beautiful hotel here in Melbourne. I have met one of the girls I will be performing with briefly at Sexpo earlier in the year, but aside from that I only know the other ladies through their work online, as is usual for shoots of the porny kind.

Michelle on the other hand has filmed me a few times now, and is easily one of the most wonderful, happy, easygoing person on the planet. She has this bubbly nature that instantly put me at ease as soon as she walked in the room, and her passion and drive for her industry as well as a genuine love for the people she has worked with means that her sterling reputation is well deserved. Michelle regularly shoots for websites such as Ersties, Yanks and Abby Winters to name a few.

Of course, the porn industry has always had a reputation for being sleazy, and click-bait documentaries like ‘Hot Girls Wanted’ paints performers as being exploited by big companies that don’t give a shit about them. Sure, that kind of stuff happens, but no more than any other industry. Like all sex work, it is actually the social stigma that does the most harm to performers, rather than the work itself.

So, what does VR have to do with it? Well, like with any new piece of tech, if it can be used in any way for porn, people will find a way to do it. VR porn hasn’t been around for very long but oh god is it a game-changer.

The intrigue of virtual reality is that it is an intense, all-encompassing experience that makes you feel like you are a part of the action. It can be confronting to watch, even uncomfortable, because the quality is just that good. There are some amazing applications for this tech, to sexual therapy for disabled persons and potentially even in the psychological field working with people with intimacy issues and PTSD.

My first experience in watching VR porn was the day I met Michelle at Sexpo, she strapped a headset over my eyes and pressed a button – I was immediately transported to a suburban backyard where Australian porn star Marina Lee was staring adoringly into my eyes and touching herself (what seemed like) less than a meter away. It was actually hard to watch because I was certainly not expecting that level of intimacy, but after a minute or so I was hooked.

Some big brands have hopped on the VR train early, with Sony, HTC, Samsung and even Google bringing out headsets that are great quality for a reasonable(ish) price.

The porn industry is used to taking the blame for people’s shitty behaviors, and of course even as it is in its infancy, people are talking about how this new set of experiences being harmful to relationships and promoting ‘damaging’ behaviors, like unrealistic expectations of sex and relationships. Thankfully, I think most people can tell the difference between fantasy and reality, and it is really up to parents to teach their children about sexual health and porn literacy.

So what is next for VR porn? With new applications being constantly discovered and the tech itself being refined, I can see traditional porn taking the backseat as people strive toward a more authentic sexual experience.
